Abraham 1.0 and the Middle East

Abraham CloseupSo Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.   Genesis 16:2

Abram had a vision from God, telling him that his descendants would be as the stars in the night sky. Abram reminded God that he had no heirs; Sarai was barren. Indeed, one born in his house would be his heir; not his biological offspring. God told him that there would be an heir of his own flesh and blood, and that the land of Canaan would be the land of his descendants.

Sarai figured she knew better than God, seeing as she was old and childless. God says her husband will have a flesh and blood heir? Obviously, not through her! She apparently wanted to get this ball rolling, and tells her husband to have sex with her maid, get her pregnant, and that kid will be the one.

You just know that when a woman tells her husband to have sex with the help it isn’t going to end well.

Abram takes her maid, Hagar, and she gets pregnant right away. Hagar also gets a bit uppity with her employer, Sarai.

Confrontation“Guess who’s pregnant? Not you! Who’s yo momma now, wench??”

Or an attitude to that effect.

Sarai, suffering from a memory drain as to just whose idea this was, starts riding Abram for this terrible state of affairs. I can imagine Abram standing there in a slack-jawed, wide-eyed stupor: “But-but-but-but…”Dumbfounded Man

Sarai went after Hagar so hard that Hagar fled into the wilderness. God’s angel came to her and told her that “Behold, you are with child, And you shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, Because the Lord has heard your affliction. 12 He shall be a wild man; His hand shall be against every man, And every man’s hand against him. And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.” Genesis 16:11-12

Ishmael became the father of the Arab nations, while Abram and Sarai’s son, Isaac, gives rise to the Jewish nation. If the angel’s prophecy to Hagar doesn’t fit the state of affairs in the Middle East to a “T”, I don’t know what does.

There’s no amount of diplomacy that’s going to fix that. The children of Isaac and the Children of Ishmael have been going at it for about 4000 years; Ishmael was born 2032CP, Isaac in 2046CP.

Next – Abraham 2.0, the name change! And Isaac will be on the way!
