Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.    Hebrews 4:16

The old Lutheran Order of Matins liturgy includes a confession of sins.  We admit to God the we are “poor, miserable sinners.”  And so we are.

When I think of how many sins I know about (we often sin without knowing it – we are so prone to sin!) and how many times I’ve asked for forgiveness for the same sins I can’t help thinking God will just cut me off.  I know I would!

In writing to the Hebrews, the author understands that dilemma of knowing we’re not worthy but needing to approach God anyway.  He’s telling them and us that God is better than we are.  He won’t grow tired of forgiving and loving.

He is Someone we can approach boldly, because he loves us so much!
