Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.    Psalm 139:23-24

These are the final lines of this psalm in which King David alternately wonders at God’s knowledge of him and how inescapable He is. He even describes how God formed him in his mother’s womb, which should make abortionists shudder; destroying something God is in the process of creating.

David calls for God’s judgment in verses 19-22, calling for their destruction. He also tells God he hates those who hate Him; “I’m with you, God!”

But he knows he isn’t perfect. He wants to remain on God’s side, not numbered with the wicked he just condemned. He asks God to know even those worst parts if him to lead him away from them and into life everlasting.

It’s a prayer we should all pray. Having our souls laid bare for God is a terrifying prospect, but a necessary one. Even our anxieties are need to be purged, because they reveal our lack of faith in God’s love and providence.

We also thank God for His forgiveness through Jesus’ sacrifice. We are comforted in the midst of our anxieties and our sins by both His forgiveness and His providence of strength and hope.
