Light Speed

Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so.    Genesis 1:14-15

The age of the earth and universe has been a hot debate topic for decades.  It shouldn’t be.  There are enough time references in the Old Testament to calculate that the universe is about 6000 years old.  I’ve even gone through that exercise myself, and it works.

The problem started with Darwin and the development of the theory of evolution.  The problem with the Biblical age of the universe is that it didn’t provide enough time for evolution to work.  Pro evolution scientists needed millions of years to accommodate the idea that spontaneous changes in DNA could yield the diversity of life we see today.  They called for a universe that’s millions, even billions of years old, an idea known as “deep time.”  That’s when people started getting the notion that the Bible must somehow be wrong.

If you have a Biblical world view, you’ll know that evolution can’t possibly work.  And science supports it!  For example, geologic layers throughout the world match up precisely with each other.  How does that happen without a global event lasting roughly a year and with many stages from the first rain drop to Noah and company stepping off the ark?

Evolution doesn’t work theologically.  It depends on millions of years of death at the hands of nature before producing mankind.  The problem is that death entered the world through the sin of one man, Adam.  How could death exist prior to Adam?  This alone should make evolution and deep time untenable for Christians who want to compromise, declaring their faith in God and still giving evolution credence.

The theory of evolution: it’s a theory, which has not yet been proven.  We see countless examples of variations within species currently and in the geologic record, but no completely new species.  Variations occur by the environment favoring certain DNA combinations, but that is not a change of species!  Even Dr. Lyall Watson, famed anthropologist and evolution proponent admits, “The fossils that decorate our family tree are so scarce that there are still more scientists than specimens. The remarkable fact is that all of the physical evidence we have for human evolution can still be placed, with room to spare, inside a single coffin!”

Science gives us every proof that evolution is more a religion than good science!

But there’s one bugaboo that has put a crimp in people’s ability to accept a 6000 year old universe…

LIGHT SPEED!

I said LIGHT speed, not WARP speed, captain!!

If the universe is a mere 6000 years old, how is that we can see the light of stars that are millions of light years away?  Riddle me that, Batman!

Enter Albert Einstein and his theory of relativity.  It gives a profound spin to the idea of speed.

Let’s start with what we all know.  First, the speed of light is finite and unchangeable at 186,282 miles per second.  At that rate, it should take millions of years for the light of most stars to each earth.

BUT…

While the formula – distance over time – is unchangeable, one element of that equation is relative.  Time!

From the article Real-World Relativity: The GPS Navigation System: “…the clock ticks from the GPS satellites must be known to an accuracy of 20-30 nanoseconds…when viewed from the surface of the Earth, the clocks on the satellites appear to be ticking faster than identical clocks on the ground. A calculation using General Relativity predicts that the clocks in each GPS satellite should get ahead of ground-based clocks by 45 microseconds per day.”  That equals 45,000 nanoseconds per day for a system that requires precision within 20-30 nanoseconds.  Huge difference!

The initial algorithms for GPS software produced poor results.  They then realized that Einstein’s theory meant that there was a difference in the speed of time between objects in orbit and objects on earth.  Increased gravity equals increase speed in the flow of time.  Objects on earth age faster than objects in orbit.  It’s not so much that we can discern it with our senses, but the GPS system proves the difference in the flow of time!

So, proximity to a gravity well (planet, moon, star, etc.) determines the speed of time!  The further you get from a gravity well, the slower time passes.

Outer space is mostly that – just empty space.  One astronomer used this example; if two galaxies were to cross paths one might expect massive collisions and destruction.  In reality, there is so much emptiness within every galaxy that two galaxies could cross each other with nothing happening!  Within that vastness, often light years away from any gravity well, time would slow to a crawl.

The second idea relating to the flow of time is time dilation; the faster an object travels, the slower time passes for it.  As one approaches light speed, time slows to a mere crawl and perhaps even stops at light speed!

In deep space between the stars and earth, one second cold last millions of earth years!  Light from those distant stars could arrive here for us to see almost instantaneously.

I don’t know if there’s a direct bearing, but this reminds me of 2 Peter 3:8, “But beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.”

Despite what the evolutionists and deep time advocates try to tell us, science itself proves that the Bible is correct!

  1. When God created the cosmos and every living being on earth in six days, everything was mature. What came first the chicken or the egg? A mature chicken, of course! There are so many stars that when we look up at the heavens we should only see solid light from the stars, because they would be overlapping in our sight. Why is it that the night sky is black with only specks of starlight at night? God is spreading out the heavens like a curtain. The cosmos is expanding and the stars are so distant that they are moving at lightspeed away from earth.

Your ideas are important too!
