King Solomon’s Sea

And he made the Sea of cast bronze, ten cubits (14.76 ft) from one brim to the other; it was completely round. Its height was five cubits (7.4 ft), and a line of thirty cubits (44.3 ft) measured its circumference.   1 Kings 7:23

Solomons SeaThe bronze Sea of King Solomon’s temple was a grander version of the Brazen Laver in Moses’ portable tabernacle that existed all the through King David’s reign. I never knew what either was for until recently finding an article about the symbolism involved in the original tabernacle.

Brazen Laver+The Brazen Laver was used for ceremonial washing. The bowl was mirrored. The idea was that, as you bent over it to ceremonial wash yourself, you would see yourself in the mirrored bottom with heaven “above” you. The water serves as a reminder of the barrier we have between us and God in heaven.

This concept is echoed in Revelation 4:6, which describes the “sea of glass similar to a crystal.” The commentator I read regarding the symbolism of the tabernacle this is actually what we would see as the in this reflection the watery upper parts of heaven, the circular vault of heaven.

This recalls Creation in Genesis 1:

Then God said, “Let there be a [c]firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.

Personally, I’ve always had trouble interpreting this part of Creation, because my mind automatically jumps to “firmament” as being the “firm” ground. Clearly, I struggle with Genesis, because I’m not reading it in the original language. English is a very poor language for nuances and distinctions. Fortunately, science comes to my rescue , and awesomely so!!

Milky Way 2dark-choco-e2aBy the way, I disdain the overuse of “awesome.” As good as my wife’s lasagna is, it is not awesome; it does not inspire awe despite the reaction of my salivary glands. The Grand Canyon, the Milky Way, the Aurora Borealis…chocolate: these are awesome, as in “inspiring awe.” My using that word here is very deliberate.

Here is a distillation of the subject from page 54 of The Created Cosmos by Danny R. Faulkner:

Creation describes the waters above and the waters below. Thinking small, I always thought that the waters above referred to the clouds. Then I read something about the background radiation we constantly pick up in space. Proponents of Deep Time (billions of years) theorize that it is residual noise from the Bing Bang explosion. But there is another theory which lends credence to Genesis 1.

Let’s start with the fact that some scientists have discovered that the universe is a sphere. There is a literal horizon past which no technology can see. Evidence has been found for innumerable galaxies within detection but also for them to continue, not into infinity, but around and out of site. The indication is that there is a horizon to the universe we simply cannot see past just as there’s a horizon to earth we can’t see past.

Universe as SphereIn short, the universe is a sphere just as everything else within it is spherical, from the shapes of planets, moons, and stars to the “flattened spheres” of solar systems and galaxies. The question becomes, “What if the firmament in Genesis 1 is not planetary but universal?”

The theory then becomes that the universe – not earth – is surrounded by water, that being the layer that separates us from heaven that God occupies. Water, like everything else, gives off its own radiation. You and I emit extremely low level radiation courtesy of our DNA. See my series Pirates of the Sacred Spiral for more on what your DNA really does as well as a history of research on it.

Someone much smarter than I am was able to calculate that the background radiation signature of water on a universal scale and discovered one would expect it to produce the very background radiation currently ascribed to left-over noise from the Big Bang.

Sooo…to get us back to the Brazen Laver and Solomon’s Sea in his Temple, recall that both were made according to instructions God gave, specifically that they were bowl-shaped. The reflection one would see looking into them shows self, water, and the spherical universe above them!

I’m always amazed at how science and God’s Word dovetail. I’m amazed at how the symbolism and messages built in to God’s Word contain depths that continue to amaze.

And inspire awe!

FULL DISCLOSURE: First, I originally published this article not having found the source material, The Created Cosmos.  I have reedited to properly source the information from that book.  Second, I also know that I read an article about our technology not being able to see past the horizon of the universe. I still can’t find that one.

Those things being said, I must point out that most cosmologists favor a flat universe. This is based on the Big Bang theory. I find this hard to understand, because explosions are SPHERICAL, not flat. I also read one individual saying that the universe is flat, but then expresses surprise that it might be so. In other words, the flat-universe crew have agreed to agree that the universe is flat while at the same time not having a full deck to support it.
