Before the Dawn

Matthew 4:16

The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned.”

“In a small rented house in Gary, Indiana, swarms of large black flies continuously invaded the front porch of a family of four…7 five men could barely hold (one child, age 7) down. In front of a nurse and the family’s case worker, his older brother climbed the wall backward and then walked upside down across the ceiling before flipping back onto the ground.

“Gary police Capt. Charles Austin…, a 36-year veteran…said he initially thought…her family concocted an elaborate tale as a way to make money…He later told The Indianapolis Star he believed in ghosts and the supernatural but said he didn’t believe in demons. Austin said he changed his mind after visiting the Carolina Street house”

This from an article about the Vatican reporting increasing exorcism activity worldwide. See

And then from the Vatican –

Fr. Taraborelli (in Rome) has performed exorcisms. He stumbled into the job when a fellow priest needed help. “I didn’t know what it was, I hadn’t studied it,” the father says. “He told me what to do. I was totally ignorant.” He has since become one of Rome’s busiest exorcists, and the Catholic Church is struggling to find younger successors.”

He urges psychiatric counseling to all who come. Holy Water, crucifixes, and the other tools of exorcism are kept as a last resort after earthly inquiries and remedies are exhausted.  Or until someone climbs the walls.

The secular world doesn’t believe in demons and Satan. These things are great topics for movies, but that’s the end of it.  Unless, of course, you live in a certain rental property in Gary, IN.

“Well, someone who isn’t a believer doesn’t believe in the devil either,” he says, “But someone who believes knows that the devil exists, you can read it in the gospel. Then you only need to see how the world is nowadays. It has never been this bad. These violence acts are not human. So terrible…I told the bishop that I can’t find anyone willing to do this. Many of them are scared. Even priests can be scared. It’s a difficult life.”

I don’t know about you, but this sort of thing can really weird me out. That is one of Satan’s purposes in all this.  He enjoys tormenting the objects of God’s love since he knows he can’t touch Yah.  He hates us too.  God favors us over him, and that drives a power-mad thing like him absolutely bat guano crazy.

Fear and worry; those are his toes in the door, the crack in the dam. Then I remember that I have a free pass!  I am invulnerable, living under God’s grace.  The darkness can’t touch me or you, because God is our salvation, an ever present Help in trouble.  Satan can come right to my door, but he can’t cross the threshold unless I’m stupid enough to let him.

Is Satan stepping up his game in these days? Are even the faithful afraid?  Yes to both.  Darkness spreads across the globe.  But that’s OK.  It’s all part of the script.  We’ve read the last page.

The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, Upon them a light has shined.    Isaiah 9:2

That’s scene, cut, and print. Fade to…LIGHT!
