Wanted: Incubators

Mark 10:6-8

But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.  For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.

Well, just when I thought it couldn’t get any weirder, it did. Here I am working on a series about the book “DNA: Pirates of the Sacred Spiral,” and I run into yet another article dealing with genetics.

First there was the interbreeding of different species in “Animal Human Crossbreeding” – https://jeffreyhking.wordpress.com/2016/05/21/animal-human-crossbreeding/

Then last month I wrote about the “7 Creepiest Possibilities of DNA Editing” – https://jeffreyhking.wordpress.com/2016/08/15/7-creepiest-possibilities-of-dna-editing/

I’m not entirely sure how to broach this topic, so I’m going to slide in from another direction.

Frank Herbert was a prolific Sci-Fi author, best known for his Dune series. Early on we learned that cloned embryos were placed in axlotl tanks to be brought to term and then taken out.  Several books into the series we learn that these so-called tanks are simply these huge, grotesque females who are used as living incubators.  I remember the feeling of revulsion from the description.

I’ll now break the news that science has taken the first step in that direction. Common knowledge has always told us that you need men and women to make babies.  Headline from September 13: Motherless babies possible as scientists create live offspring without need for female egg.”  And the link to the article – http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2016/09/13/motherless-babies-possible-as-scientists-create-live-offspring-w/

That’s right, folks. “Motherless babies could be on the horizon after scientists discovered a method of creating offspring without the need for a female egg…The landmark experiment by the University of Bath rewrites 200 years of biology teaching and could pave the way for a baby to be born from the DNA of two men.”

Scientists have discovered how to make, say, skin cells, into embryos with a full complement of chromosomes. Just add sperm to fertilize it, wait nine months, remove from the oven, and allow to coo (deliberately left off the “l”).

Do you think this is just in the talk-about-it stage? Oh, no!  No, this is accomplished fact.  The boys have used their test tubes, Bunsen burners, and beakers to produce 3 generations of lab mice who can reproduce just fine, thank you very much.

A man could conceivably have a baby with himself! Take some skin cells or other cells, fertilize them with his own sperm, and be a really single parent.  Gay men could produce a child from strictly themselves; generic cells from one, sperm from the other, and voila!

“More realistically, the technique could allow women whose fertility has been wiped out by cancer drugs or radiotherapy to have their own children.”

Right. Notice how that comes after all of the other scenarios in the article.

If some guy is looking to have kids, he could take out an ad for the right woman, but not for traditional reproduction. The ad would have a caveat something like “Ovaries need not apply.”

Women could earn extra money by taking out a very simple ad: “Womb for went…um, rent.”

There story does not end there. Current success rate is 24% with the mice.  That’s a bit better than in vitro fertilization.  There are embryos that just won’t cut it and, well, they just don’t get to live.  Not even given a shot.  People at their most vulnerable and they’re just discarded.

So we still seem to need women to have babies. Not all of them; just the uterus.  Maybe the boys in the lab will be able to make a uterus-only axlotl tank instead of women laid out like so much lab equipment.

Hyperbole? Would you have imagined an article like this could have seriously been written just 5 years ago?  Yeah, me neither.

All I know for certain is that this is NOT what God had in mind from the beginning.

  1. What do you say about surrogate mothers? In India many women become surrogate moms for women in other countries who can’t have children. The wombs for rent cost about $100,000. The surrogates are able to support their families, buy a home, sent their children to higher learning. You can see the documentary on YouTube. “Wombs for Rent.” I say that adoption would be the better way. Jesus said, “Call no man your father, for your Father is in heaven. pray like this, Our Father, who art in heaven….” Is the practice of using surrogates an evil?

Your ideas are important too!
