“26 And He has made from one blood[a] every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, 27 so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;” Acts 17:26-27
AI – Artificial Intelligence – seems to have been cast in the role of the world’s (latest) savior. What huge problems does this world have that we could use some help solving? Well, look no further, because “Artificial intelligence will let scientists solve some of the world’s ‘hard problems.’”
Google Chairman Eric Schmidt thinks AI is the technological breakthrough that will solve at least our biggest problems on a worldwide scale. He also has hope for the smaller corners of the world. He thinks it would be great for everyone to have AI as their own…well, what? Butler, servant, personal assistant?
“He says he hopes to one day have an ‘Eric’ and ‘Not-Eric’, with Eric being himself and ‘Not-Eric’ being ‘this digital thing that helps me.’”
We’ve pretty well atrophied our bodies thanks to video games. Now they’re working on our brains. When I was a teenager, there were no push-button phones. All rotary dial. I had dozens of phone numbers memorized. That’s the only way you could do it unless you carried a personal (paper) directory around with you. Today I’m lucky if I can give out my personal cell number without stumbling. “Don’t think about it. Just say it. Otherwise…Oh, FUDGE!”
AI will be used to pilot driverless cars. I recently spoke with someone who told me about a major municipality that already uses DRIVERLESS SNOWPLOWS!! I get the willies just thinking about that one. So do the locals, apparently. They had to start putting dummies in the drivers’ seats to avoid unnerving drivers.
I used to be a service writer in a garage, and let me tell you I know how well people don’t maintain their cars. I had one lady come in with grinding brakes. Are you familiar with brake rotors? Two discs with cooling fins in between. Well, this lady had ground off one whole side of the front rotors! But she couldn’t do brakes right now, so off she goes!
I was at a quarry where I learned how they determined of the trucks needed the brakes replaced. These are trucks, by the way, that carry stone over city streets to the river barges. So did they do preventative inspections? No! You know the brakes need replacing when they don’t work.
So, um, how do you stop the truck? Hopefully, you’re in the quarry and steer up a ramp to use gravity to stop. What if you’re on the streets? It seems shrugging your shoulders is the answer.
So Schmidt thinks AI and it’s attending control systems will be just fine to drive for us. Good luck with that…
There’s one, huge over-riding reason why this won’t work. God. Specifically, our failure to look for Him, our dependence on ourselves and the technology we engineer. Luke tells us in Acts that we are meant to grope for and seek God. That’s where real problem-solving starts.
Mr. Schmidt thinks AI will solve over-population. No more want or hunger or…
“For you have the poor with you always, but Me you do not have always.” Matthew 26:11
Well, maybe not. It’s a losing battle. Can’t be solved. We should do all we can to help the poor, but we won’t solve them. Helping them is part of our purpose in life, some of the good works God wants us to do to grow in His ways. The poor aren’t something to engineer our way out of.
Next problem? Whatever list you come up with, it all falls into one larger bucket: Satan. Name a problem, any problem. The root cause is always Satan and sin. Period.
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” 1 Peter 5:8
“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,…” Ephesians 2:1-2
Satan owns the earth. Period. This is his playground, doing his thing, doing his best to lead us astray. So, if you think AI is going to solve ANY of the problems Schmidt says it will, I hope you like disappointment.
Jesus is what’s going to solve anything around here. He is the solution. One so important that God spent thousands of years to make the time right for His introduction. I suppose you could call Him AI at that point; Almighty Infant.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33
